What Drew Me Towards Computer Science

Asad Hasan Alvi

It may sound cliché, but everyone on this planet has a purpose. Everyone has something they're good at. Everyone has that spark in them which makes them stand out from others. For me, that spark is Computer Science.

I have been surrounded by technology my entire life. Be it computers, tablets, mobile phones, you name it. These devices have always fascinated me because of how they 'just work'. They felt like magic. I loved how they help people and change their lives for the better. For many years, I was confused about what to do with my life because I hadn't realized my love for technology at that time. But over time, I realized that it wasn't just fascination, it was passion. I realized that technology had been calling me all along.

What I've come to know about computer science is that it is a constantly evolving field with new discoveries being made every single day. You have to keep up with it or be left behind entirely. It's always good to start early, so during my early teenage years, I started to learn computer science (programming, mostly). I took Harvard's online CS50x course, which was an incredibly rewarding (and difficult!) journey. It took me a few years to complete because I had to balance it with school, but it was definitely worth it. I also picked up Python and Web Development through online courses. I am currently diving deeper into Full Stack Web Development because the idea of developing applications for other people fascinates me.

To expand my exposure, I further explored the branches of CS by learning about AI and Machine Learning through NUST's AI Nexus Programme, which included two weeks of training and a one week internship. This really opened up my mind about what I want to do with my future and has helped me realize that this is the direction I want to take in my career.

Now, as an A Level student, I'm preparing to apply to top universities to pursue this passion further. I want to use technology to create real-world impact. I want to build meaningful projects that solve problems, improve lives, and make a difference. I know that it is easier said than done, but I'm up for the challenge.

In the end, I just want to say: this is only the beginning. If you are really passionate about something, whether it is CS or something different, chase it. You'll only make the world a better place. Don't give up at the setbacks. Struggle now so that you can shine later.

Let's build the future.
